Ants

Ants are one of the most common household pests, and one of the smartest as well. The most common household ants are: The Argentine Ant, The Fire Ant, The Carpenter Ant, The Field Ant and The Acrobat Ant. They are very adaptable life forms and are very difficult for a homeowner to remove especially after a colony has been established.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small parasitic insects that look reddish-brown, with a flattened oval appearance. They feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals like humans at night and will hide in crevices of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and behind headboards during the day. Bed bugs are mostly active at night and can feed on their human hosts in relative secrecy. Bed bug bites can cause skin rashes and allergic symptoms. If untreated, bed bug infestations can become very large and will often migrate to other rooms or apartments.

Bees

Bees are flying insects closely related to ants. They play a major role in pollination and the production of honey. However they can be harmful. Bee stings can cause severe allergic reactions that have been known to cause hospitalization and death. The five most common bees are Bumble Bees, Yellow Jackets, Carpenter Bees, Wasps and Honey Bees.

Cave Crickets

These are the crickets that JUMP and scare the bejeezus out of you when you go down stairs and turn the light on. Beside from scaring you half to death, these cave crickets can cause damage to wood and other organic house materials. Other crickets include the Field Cricket and the House Cricket.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are a very common household pest. They feed off most human food and depending on infestation, can leave a very foul odor and mess. The most common household/commercial roaches are: The German Roach, The Oriental Roach, The American Roach, The Brown Banded Roach. They are potential carriers of harmful bacteria, they can cause allergic reaction and can trigger asthma problems. The best way to keep away roach infestations is to keep food in dried/sealed containers. Frequent cleaning of the kitchen is also a necessity. Roaches can live for months without food or water.

Fleas

There are up to 2,000 known species of fleas. They are blood feeders, which make them transmitters for harmful diseases. Rat fleas mostly attack humans while human fleas mostly attack rats. (Makes no sense, we know.) The cat flea is the pest mostly found in a home. It attacks both cats and dogs. All fleas undergo a complete life cycle, egg-larva-pupa to adult. Adult cat fleas lay up to 30 eggs per day. During the warmer months the flea population can increase more rapidly. Effective flea treatment requires veterinary attention for your pet/s, excessive cleaning and vacuuming and treatment of the house or commercial property. *Don’t forget to throw out your vacuum bag because the fleas will be inside.

Mice

The house mouse is a very adaptable rodent. They can thrive in a number of settings; commercial, residential, urban, and suburban. Female mice will, on average, give birth to about 60 offspring per year and can start reproducing at 5 weeks old. Mice eat most household foods and at the same time contaminate them. They also transmit a variety of diseases and parasites. They are mostly active in the nighttime and are not a fan of bright lights. As well as transmitting diseases, mice can do severe damage to a house’s structure. They can damage appliances, clothing and wiring by gnawing and urinating.

Rats

Rats are scavengers that have an amazing memory and an excellent sense of smell and taste. Rats can memorize the entire floor plan of your house or commercial residence. That’s why if you have ever turned on the light and seen one, they run, scaling the wall, at lighting speed because they have memorized every twist and turn. Rats harbor and transmit a multitude of parasites and diseases. They were the main transportation devices for The Black Plague. They can also introduce disease-carrying pests including ticks, fleas and lice. Although most rats die before they are 1 year old, rats have the ability to live up until 18 months. Adult rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter. Rats can do a lot of damage. They gnaw to stop their teeth from growing. If they do not gnaw there teeth will grow right up into their brain, killing them. They can gnaw through glass, cinder block, wire, aluminum and lead. Rats will attack BOTH humans and animals. Unattended babies have been harmed and even killed in rat attacks. Yeah….rats are bad.

Spiders

The spider has 3,000 species in North America. These arachnids dwell in basements, under rocks, on the ground, in and around playground equipment, undisturbed areas, grasses, plants, tree branches and even on water. The most common household spiders are: Recluse Spiders, Black Widow Spiders, Cellar Spiders (Daddy Long Legs), Yellow Sac Spiders and Wolf Spiders. Spiders rarely bite humans due to their rather small fangs but may if they feel trapped or attacked. Spiders are rather good for the environment, as they keep away other insects on the outside of your home but do play into the fear factor for most people.

Termites

According the United States Department of Agriculture, termites cause billions of dollars in damage to homes, schools and businesses every year. The main termite that will damage your home is The Eastern Subterranean Termite. They are small white-to-tan insects that build nests in soil. They can cause serious structural damage to buildings, crops or forests. Winged termites, known as the workers are usually the first termites a person will notice when an active colony is present. Worker termites gather all the provision for the colony and cause damage to structures. Each spring swarming termites cause panic among homeowners.

Ticks

In the United States alone, there are about 200 species of ticks. Ticks feed on the blood of vertebrates making them a real problem for humans. Ticks can be found living in tall grass or shrubs and most ticks spend a large majority of their life on the ground waiting for a host. Ticks do not hop, jump, run or fly but they can fall onto a host. Ticks can live upwards of 200 days without food or water and they can live a healthy life from 2 months to 2 years. The most common disease produced by ticks is Lyme disease
